Leisure Centre

The YMCA Leisure Centre is situated in the town centre between the north and south bay of Scarborough, a holiday resort situated on the East Coast of Northern England. Facilities include a 290 seat Theatre fully equipped with computerised lighting and sound control, large stage with fly areas, scenery dock, theatre workshop, band pit and tiered seating. Full dressing room facilities are provided, together with large costume department and rehearsal areas. The Theatre stages many productions each year including an annual pantomime, a special summer show, drama festivals, dance shows and musicals. Special disabled lift installed to back stage areas. Other facilities include a Gymnasium, Fitness Centre, Changing & Shower Rooms, Sauna, Dance Studio, Nursery, Meeting Rooms & Youth Enquiry Service.

The YMCA is one of the largest voluntary providers of recreational and sports facilities, helping the whole community towards a healthier, happier lifestyle. The YMCA is also open to male and female; today nearly half of all members and participants are female.

Fitness Training: The Fitness Centre is open Monday to Friday 9am to 10pm & Saturdays 10am to 1pm. Inductions can be arranged at Reception.

Gymnastics: Beginners: Friday 6pm to 7pm Beginners (5yrs +), 7pm to 8pm Intermediates, 8pm to 9pm Advanced.

Trampolining: Wednesday 7pm to 8pm (6 to 10yrs), 8pm to 9pm (11yrs +).

Fun Fit Tumbling Tots: Friday 4.30pm to 5.30pm Gymnastics for 3 to 5yrs.

Ju Jitsu: Tuesday 7pm to 8.15pm Juniors (6 to 13yrs), 8.15pm to 10pm Seniors. Thursday 7pm to 8.15pm Juniors (6 to 13yrs), 8.15pm to 10pm Seniors.

Football Training: Monday 7pm to 8pm (6 to 10yrs), 8pm to 9pm (10yrs +).

Summer Show Productions: Rehearsals on Tuesday & Thursday (May to July). Production presented in the YMCA Theatre from the last week in July for six weeks.

Pantomime Production: Rehearsals on Tuesday & Thursday (October to Christmas). Production presented in the YMCA Theatre from Boxing Day for just over one week, with two performances most days.

Spring Production: Rehearsals on Tuesday & Thursday (January to April). Production presented in YMCA Theatre during early May.

Yorkshire Coast School of Ballet: The school is based at the YMCA Leisure Centre and uses the Gymnasium & Dance Studio. Classes are held each day Monday to Thursday and all day Saturday. Details from Helen Held 01723 516395

Rowlies Academy of Dance: The academy is based at the YMCA Leisure Centre and uses the Dance Studio, Community Room & Rehearsal Studio. Classes held each day Monday to Friday. Details by telephoning 01723 501366.

Variety School of Dancing: This school is based at the YMCA Leisure Centre with classes on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday. Tel: Nikki Young on 07814 609519

Shannon School of Irish Dancing: This school is based at the YMCA Leisure Centre and uses the Community Room on Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday evenings.

Susan Richards: Susan Richards is based at the YMCA Leisure Centre, offering private lessons in Russian Style Ballet in the Rehearsal Studio. Tel: 01723 352926.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme: The scheme is based within the YMCA Leisure Centre under the direction of Jenny Wilby, assisted by Wendy Marsh and Sam Marsden. The unit meets weekly on a Monday between 7pm and 10pm, also on the first Thursday in each month between 7pm and 9.30pm.

YMCA Drama Workshop: This theatre workshop for young people aged 12 to 16, meets on a Monday evening between 7pm and 9pm under the direction of Steph Andrews and Sarah Wright. Classes are also held each Saturday with Rebecca Simpson, 5 to 9 year olds 1pm to 2pm, 7 to 9 year olds 2pm to 3pm, 10 to 13 year olds 3pm to 4pm, 14 years & over 4pm to 5pm.
